A chronology of key events in the history of
Indonesia:
1500 - Islam
becomes a dominant religion in the Indonesian archipelago.
1600s - The Dutch East India Company is founded.
1942 - Japan
invades Indonesia. Indonesia is occupied by the Japanese during 1942-1945.
1945 - Indonesia
declares its Independence from the Netherlands on August 17.
1949 - The Dutch agrees
to recognise Indonesian Independence. Sukarno becomes first president of
Indonesia.
1950 - Indonesia is admitted to the United Nations
on September 26.
1967 - Indonesia,
Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand meet in Bangkok to form
Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
1968 - General
Suharto is appointed president of Indonesia.
1976 - Indonesia
invades East Timor and annexes territory as its 27th province.
1997 - Indonesian
rupiah plummets in value.
1998 - Suharto resigns on May 21st
after more than thirty years in power.
