Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque, Brunei

Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque is a royal Islamic mosque located in Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei Darussalam. The mosque considered on of the most beautiful mosques in the Asia Pacific and a major landmark and tourist attraction of Brunei.

Borobudur, Indonesia

Borobudur is a 9th century temple in Indonesia. This famous Buddhist temple is located in Munlitan, Magelang, and is about 42 km from Yogyakarta city.This colossal temple was built 300 years before Cambodia's Angkor Wat. Borobudur is Indonesia's single most visited tourist attraction.

Pha That Luang, Laos

Pha That Luang (Great Stupa) is a gold-covered large Buddhist stupa in the centre of Vientiane, Laos. It was built by the Emperor Setthathirat in the 16th century on the remains of Khmer temple belonging to the 13th century. The Pha That Luang has three levels and a number of statues of Buddha can be seen here. Buddhists from all over the world come here as a part of their quest, at the same this Great Stupa attracts tourists from around the world.

Rizal Park, also known as Luneta Park, is a historical urban park located in the heart of the city of Manila, Philippines. The park has been a favourite spot for family picnics on Sundays and holidays. It is one of the major tourist attractions  of Manila.

Famous Landmarks in Southeast Asia Part 1

A landmark includes anything that is easily recognizable, such as a monument or a building, or any other spot to designate places that might be of interest to tourists. 

Landmarks that I've included here are so famous in Southeast Asia. A few examples are the Merlion Statue, the Grand Palace , the Petronas Twin Towers and Angkor Wat.

Here is a list of 10 famous landmarks for you to recognize. Are you ready for a trip around the ASEAN region?

The Merlion Statue in Singapore

The Merlion is one of the recognized icons of Sinagapore. It is a statue of a lion head with a fish body resting on a bed of waves. It is 8.6 metres tall and weighs 70 tonnes.

The Grand Palace is a complex of buildings at the heart of Bangkok, Thailand. This palace served as an official residence of Thailand’s king from 18th century till 20th century.The location of this lovely palace is on eastern bank of Chao Phraya River.The interior parts of The Grand Palace in Bangkok consist of numerous halls, residences and the buildings that were constructed under the rule of king Rama I.

Angkor Wat is a temple complex at Angkor, Cambodia. The temple was built by King Suriyavarman II in the early 12th century as his state temple and capital city. It has become a symbol of present day Cambodia. It is depicted on the national flag and on the current 500 Riel banknote.

The Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon is the most sacred pagoda structure in the city. It is also known as the Golden Pagoda. The official title for the pagoda is "Shwedagon Zedi Daw". This is one of the best tourist attractions in Yangon.

The Shwedagon Pagoda dates back to 2500 years ago.It is located on the Singuttara Hill, lying about 190 feet above the sea. It lies to the west of the Kandawgyi Lake. The pagoda is 99 meters tall and is actually a brick stupa completely gilded with more than eight tons of gold.

The 88-story Petronas Twin Towers are the tallest twin buildings in the world and one of the top places to visit in Kuala Lumpur. It contains a complex of office buildings, conference halls, an upmarket shopping complex and a sprawling park. The Petronas Towers were the tallest buildings in the world for six years, until Teipei 101 was completed in 2004. The building is a truly impressive landmark of  Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia.

Welcome to ASEAN CORNER, a one stop destination for any seekers of ASEAN knowledge. I’m very excited about this first “Letter from the Editor” and I hope that you enjoy all of the original AC content.

AC passed a major milestone with more than 30,000 views in a single month. February set an all-time record in terms of traffic since late October, 2011. It couldn’t have happened without you! Thank you very much indeed.

It’s my great pleasure to put out various posts related to ASEAN each month. There are so many interesting things going on in the region so that I’ve had to come up with a more rapid way of gathering that information out to you.
