The former educational system of the Philippines was composed of 6 years of elementary education starting at the age of 6, and 4 years of high school education starting at the age of 12. With this system , compulsory education is not enforced.
ระบบการศึกษาแบบเก่าของประเทศฟิลิปปินส์ แบ่งเป็น 4 ระดับ ดังนี้
- ระดับอนุบาล 1-3 ปี เป็นการพัฒนาเด็กให้มีความพร้อมก่อนเข้าเรียนในระดับประถมศึกษา
- ระดับประถมศึกษา 6-7 ปี เป็นการศึกษาภาคบังคับ เป็นช่วงที่มีการพัฒนาทางด้านทักษะทางวิชาการ เพื่อเตรียมพร้อมสำหรับการเรียนในระดับมัธยมศึกษา
- ระดับมัธยมศึกษา 4 ปี เป็นขั้นเตรียมนักเรียนเพื่อการศึกษาต่อในมหาวิทยาลัย
- ระดับอุดมศึกษา

นโยบายเปลี่ยนแปลงระบบการศึกษาทั้งหมดซึ่งลงนามโดยประธานาธิบดีเบนิกโน อาคีโน เมื่อเดือนพฤษภาคมปี 2556 และมีผลบังคับใช้ตั้งแต่เดือนมิถุนายน เป็นต้นมา นั้นจะเป็นระบบ K-12 โดยมีการขยายเวลาการศึกษาขั้นพื้นฐานจาก 10 ปี ในระบบเก่า มาเป็น 12 ปี โดยเรียนในชั้นอนุบาล 1 ปี ประถมศึกษา 6 ปี มัธยมศึกษาตอนต้น 4 ปี และ เพิ่มมัธยมศึกษาตอนปลาย 2 ปี
