On the fifth of May each year, Thailand celebrates the anniversary of the coronation of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The King of Thailand is world's longest-reigning monarch.
Strong Earthquake Shakes Northern Thailand
One of Thailand's biggest earthquakes rocked the northern part of the country on May 5th. The quake, which measured 6.3 on the Richter scale, was also followed by hundreds of aftershocks that measured 3.0 to about 5.2 on the scale. The strength of the quake left temples, roads, schools, walls and windows severely damaged.
The earthquake and aftershocks were felt mainly in the northern Thai provinces of Chiang Rai, Chiang mai, Lamphun, Lampang ,Nan, Phayao and Phrae. The epicentre of the earthquake was Chiang Rai's Phan district.

Air Crash in Laos Kills Top Government Officials
A military plane carrying senior Lao government officials for security crashed in a province bordering Vietnam on 18 May. The accident killed 17 people including the country's defence minister. Only one person survived.
China-Vietnam Maritime Dispute
The installation of an oil rig in a disputed area of the South China Sea by China's state-owned company triggered massive anti-China protests and riots in Vietnam. The protesters set fire to 16 Taiwan-owned factories, mistakenly by the rioters as being owned by mainland China.
Thailand Military Seizes Power in Coup
The Thai military has taken control of the country in a coup on 22 May 2014, two days after declaring martial law. The coup follows months of political turmoil in Thailand between two main political factions, the Yellow Shirts and the Red Shirts. A nationwide curfew will operate from 22.00 to 05:00 local time (GMT+7).
