Although Thailand’s senate has defeated an amnesty bill which could have paved way for ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to return home without facing trial, anti-Thaksin demonstrators set new targets after amnesty bill had been withdrawn. They vowed to continue their protests to bring down the government led by Thaksin’s sister, prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra.


The World’s most powerful storm hit the Philippines

Typhoon Haiyan – also known as Typhoon Yolanda, battered six central Philippine islands on Nov.8. It is estimated to be one of the most powerful storms ever recorded in the history of the Philippines.

Tacloban City in Leyte province is one of the hardest-hit localities. The death toll from this storm has spiked to more than 5,000. In the aftermath, tons of food and medical items have arrived in the storm-hit area and many countries are still sending humanitarian aid to the Philippines.

Education in Malaysia:การจัดการศึกษาของประเทศมาเลเซีย

Education System of Malaysia
Education in Malaysia is overseen by two government ministries. Pre-tertiary education (pre-school to secondary education) is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education (MOE) while tertiary or higher education is the responsibility of the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE).
Level of Education
  • Pre-primary Education : It is not compulsory.
  • Primary Education : 6 years ( It is mandatory for all children between the ages of 7 and 12.)
  • Lower Secondary Education : 3 years
  • Upper Secondary Education : 2 years
  • Post-secondary Education : 1 to 2 years (The university entrance preparatory course.)
  • Tertiary Education : 3 years
The School Year
The school year in public schools in Malaysia is divided into two semesters.
  • The first term usually starts in early January and finishes at the end of May.
  • The second term usually starts in mid-June and ends mid-November.
The School Week
  • The school week lasts 5 days, from Monday to Friday.

The School Hours and Holidays
  • Most government schools run on a two-session system: morning session (7.30 pm - 1 pm) and afternoon session (1 pm - 6.30 pm).

Education in Laos:การจัดการศึกษาของประเทศลาว

Education in Laos
Education in Laos is under the responsibility of the Ministry of Education and Sports. (Learn more at: http://www.moe.gov.la/)


Basic Education
Lao PDR follows a 5+4+3 system, or a 12 year curriculum where the first 5 years are considered primary, the following 4 are lower secondary and the last 3 are upper secondary.


The School Year
The school year consists of 33 working weeks at all levels. It extends from mid-August to mid-June. The academic year is divided into two semesters, each comprising 16 to 17 weeks.

Education in Indonesia
Education in Indonesia is under the responsibility of the Ministry of Education and Culture  and the Ministry of Religious Affairs

Level of Education
Pre-School Education
Pre-school is provided for children from 4 to 6 years old for a one to two years period of education.

Basic Education
All citizens must undertake nine years of compulsory education which consists of six years at elementary level and three in secondary level.

Secondary Education
The types of secondary education include general secondary school, vocational secondary school, religious secondary school, service secondary school and secondary school.


The School Year
The school year starts in mid-July and ends in mid-June. Students receive a break in December and for the Muslim Eid holiday which differs from year to year.


The School Week
The school week lasts five or six days, from Monday to Friday or Saturday.

Education System
System of General Education in Cambodia: 6 + 3 + 3 ; 12 years of schooling.
Primary education (Grades 1-6): 6 years
Lower secondary education (Grades 7-9): 3 years
Upper Secondary (Grade 10, 11 and 12): 3 years 


The School Year
  • The new school year in Cambodia starts in the beginning of October.
  • The end of July marks the end of the school year in Cambodia.

Education in Brunei Darussalam:การจัดการศึกษาของประเทศบรูไน

Education System
The formal school system in Brunei Darussalam adopts the 1-6-3-2-2 pattern.

  • Pre-school education : 1 year
  • Primary education (Grades 1-6): 6 years 
  • Lower secondary education (Grades 7-9): 3 years 
  • Upper secondary or vocational or technical education : 2 years 
  • Pre-tertiary education : 2 years

The School Year
The school year consists of 4 terms of around 10 to 12 weeks each. The academic year commences on 02 January with a 4-week break at the end of the year. Subject to minor changes, the school terms are generally as follows:
  • Term 1: Early January – Mid March
  • Term 2: Late March – Mid June
  • Term 3: Late June – End of August
  • Term 4: Mid September – End of November
The School Week
Schools are closed on Fridays and Sundays, with Saturday being a working day.
