Education in Indonesia
Education in Indonesia is under the responsibility
of the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
Level of Education
Pre-School Education
Pre-school is provided for children from 4 to 6 years old for a one to two years period of education.
Basic Education
All citizens must undertake nine years of
compulsory education which consists of six years at elementary level and three
in secondary level.
Secondary Education
The types of secondary education include general secondary school, vocational secondary school, religious secondary school, service secondary school and secondary school.

The School Year
The school year starts in mid-July and ends in mid-June. Students receive a break in December and for the Muslim Eid holiday which differs from year to year.
The School Week
The school week lasts five or six days, from Monday to Friday or Saturday.
