- 1952 - Born in Vietnam on 1st September.
- 1974 - He graduates from the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam. He then studies Linguistics and English Literature at Jawaharal Nehru University, New Dehli, India.
- 1975 - He begins his career in Vietnam's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- 1993 - He is appointed Deputy Director-General for International Organizations.
- 1995 - He is appointed as Ambassador-Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva.
- 1997 - He is appointed as Ambassador - Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations at Headquarters.
- 2004 - He is the Ambassador of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to the United Nations in New York.
- 2008 - He is the President of the United Nations Security Council in July 2008.
- 2009 - He is the President of the United Nations Security Council in October 2009.
- 2012 - He is nominated as ASEAN Secretary-General by the government of Vietnam.
- 2013 - The ASEAN leaders endorse him as ASEAN Secretary-General for 2013-2017.
