Degrees of Comparison
Degrees of comparison are used when we compare one person or one thing with another.
There are three Degrees of Comparison in English.
They are:
- Positive degree
- Comparative degree
- Superlative degree
1. The positive degree is used to speak about only one person or thing.
Example:
- The Penang Bridge is long.
- Keannam Hanoi Landmark Tower is tall.
- Sumatra Island is large.
2. The comparative degree is used to compare two persons or two things. It is always followed by than.
Example:
- Mount Hkakabo Razi in Myanmar is taller than Mount Kinabalu in Malaysia.
- The Penang Bridge in Malaysia is longer than the Thanlwin Bridge in Myanmar.
- Lake Toba is larger than Towuti Lake.
* Most adjectives: + -er
3. The superlative degree is used to compared a person or thing with a group.
Example:
- The Mekong River is the longest river in Southeast Asia.
- The Tonle Sap is the largest fresh water lake in Southeast Asia.
- Mount Hkakabo Razi in Myanmar is the tallest mountain in Southeast Asia.
